Se demostr\u00f3 que el descarrilamiento de un tren expreso de pasajeros con v\u00edctimas mortales se debi\u00f3 a la fatiga por contacto de rodadura (FCR), en la que peque\u00f1as grietas en la cabeza del ra\u00edl se extend\u00edan hacia el cuerpo del ra\u00edl, provocando finalmente una rotura.<\/p><p>Las estad\u00edsticas elaboradas por la Administraci\u00f3n Federal de Ferrocarriles de Estados Unidos sugieren que la FCR estuvo fuertemente implicada en 122 descarrilamientos, y puede haber sido un factor contribuyente en otros 160 incidentes, durante el periodo 1995-2002.<\/p><p>Como resultado de estad\u00edsticas como \u00e9stas, la FCR est\u00e1 ampliamente aceptada como un problema que debe ser gestionado por las administraciones ferroviarias. No hacer nada no es una opci\u00f3n: el Reino Unido dej\u00f3 de esmerilar los ra\u00edles unos a\u00f1os antes del accidente, y ahora se reconoce que no fue una decisi\u00f3n acertada. El esmerilado afeita la superficie superior del ra\u00edl, eliminando las grietas antes de que tengan la oportunidad de propagarse hacia el alma y evitando as\u00ed las roturas del ra\u00edl.<\/p><div id=\"europ-3f6ba8490e2ad7826762e3f12fa2d588\" class=\"europ-3f6ba8490e2ad7826762e3f12fa2d588 europ-content\">\u00a0<\/div><p>Un estudio de la Comisi\u00f3n Europea sugiere que la gesti\u00f3n de las FCR es un ejercicio costoso, con una cifra de 300 millones de euros mencionada para la gesti\u00f3n del problema cada a\u00f1o en la red ferroviaria europea. Esta cifra incluye las actividades de inspecci\u00f3n, amolado, sustituci\u00f3n de ra\u00edles y reparaci\u00f3n de soldaduras, adem\u00e1s de los retrasos y descarrilamientos que se producen.<\/p><p>Evidentemente, se trata de un problema que merece tiempo de gesti\u00f3n y las administraciones ferroviarias deben mantenerse al d\u00eda de las \u00faltimas tecnolog\u00edas si quieren minimizar el coste de los FCR.<\/p><h2>Gesti\u00f3n del FCR<\/h2><p>En un estudio para el Consejo Nacional de Investigaci\u00f3n de Canad\u00e1, Eric Magel, Peter Sroba, Kevin Sawley y Joe Kalousek afirman que \u201cson muchos los factores que interact\u00faan para influir en la FCR\u201d, citando entre otros la dureza de los ra\u00edles, los perfiles detallados de ruedas y ra\u00edles y la din\u00e1mica lateral y longitudinal de los ejes. Pero afirman que \u201cla FCR es especialmente sensible a los perfiles de rueda y carril, y unos perfiles inadecuados o incontrolados pueden enmascarar por completo los efectos de la metalurgia\u201d.\u201d<\/p><p>Los investigadores a\u00f1aden que en el Reino Unido, la experiencia general ha sido que los aceros de alta resistencia son m\u00e1s propensos a formar RCF - \u201cun hallazgo que puede explicarse por la secci\u00f3n de carril de alta tensi\u00f3n empleada y la incapacidad de los aceros duros para desgastarse o fluir a una forma de menor tensi\u00f3n\u201d. Seg\u00fan la experiencia brit\u00e1nica, si el ra\u00edl se rectifica inicialmente para darle una forma de menor tensi\u00f3n, es mucho m\u00e1s resistente a la FCR que los aceros m\u00e1s blandos. Esto subraya la importancia del rectificado inicial de los ra\u00edles.<\/p><p>Los investigadores canadienses explican la importancia de la \u2018Tasa de Desgaste M\u00e1gico\u2019, el proceso de eliminar la cantidad justa de la superficie del carril para evitar la propagaci\u00f3n de grietas. \u201cEn las v\u00edas con RCF, la tasa de desgaste natural debe complementarse con el esmerilado para alcanzar la Tasa de Desgaste M\u00e1gico\u201d, afirman. El \u00cdndice de Desgaste M\u00e1gico suele ser mayor en las curvas que en las v\u00edas rectas, y la experiencia norteamericana en l\u00edneas de gran tonelaje demuestra que el carril inferior en las curvas tiene que gestionarse cuidadosamente mediante esmerilado para alcanzar el \u00cdndice de Desgaste M\u00e1gico.<\/p><h2>Speno, a la vanguardia de la innovaci\u00f3n<\/h2><p>Hace algunos a\u00f1os, Speno International empez\u00f3 a investigar la posibilidad de detectar grietas superficiales por fatiga durante el rectificado. Un desarrollo conjunto con Deutsche Bahn AG dio como resultado un sistema de registro capaz de medir la densidad de defectos y la profundidad de los da\u00f1os.<\/p><p>Tras intensas pruebas en pista con un dispositivo prototipo, seis rectificadoras Speno han sido equipadas con el \u2018Headcheck Grinding Scanner\u2019 de la empresa. El sistema permite a los operarios comprobar la reducci\u00f3n de los defectos de fatiga durante cada pasada de rectificado y documentar el resultado obtenido con respecto a la eliminaci\u00f3n de metal de la superficie fatigada del carril. El sistema ha entrado en servicio comercial en varios ferrocarriles europeos, entre ellos los de Austria, Francia, Pa\u00edses Bajos y Polonia.<\/p><p>La llegada del \u2018esc\u00e1ner de rectificado Headcheck\u2019 es la \u00faltima de una larga lista de innovaciones de Speno. En la d\u00e9cada de 1980, la empresa introdujo un tren de esmerilado con motores de esmerilado basculantes controlados a distancia. Le siguieron la primera esmeriladora de agujas, el primer equipo de medici\u00f3n a bordo de la secci\u00f3n transversal del carril y la introducci\u00f3n de sistemas de recogida de polvo.<\/p><p>Speno colabora con los gestores de infraestructuras ferroviarias en la b\u00fasqueda de soluciones a los defectos y problemas espec\u00edficos que genera el tr\u00e1fico ferroviario pesado. La empresa participa en el proyecto de investigaci\u00f3n europeo \u2018Innotrack\u2019, que re\u00fane la experiencia y los conocimientos de varias organizaciones ferroviarias y de la industria.<\/p><p>Speno preside el proyecto de trabajo 4.5 \u2018Mantenimiento ferroviario\u2019 dentro del programa Innotrack. La empresa afirma que el truco no est\u00e1 s\u00f3lo en eliminar una determinada cantidad de metal en una pasada, sino en asegurar la m\u00ednima tasa de eliminaci\u00f3n de metal.<\/p><h2>Nuevo veh\u00edculo fresador Linsinger para trenes de cercan\u00edas<\/h2><p>El tren fresador de ra\u00edles SF 01 F de la austriaca Linsinger tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1 destinado al sector de los trenes ligeros. Sali\u00f3 al mercado hace un a\u00f1o, a principios de 2008, y la empresa afirma que ha obtenido muy buenos resultados en sistemas de ferrocarril ligero en Asia.<\/p><p>El concepto de perfilado del carril con fresado mediante procesamiento de una sola pasada ya es bien conocido de m\u00e1quinas anteriores de Linsinger, y la SF 01 F se basa en esta experiencia.
